2024 Eye Opener - The Faces of ACES: Adverse Childhood Experiences

2024 Eye Opener - The Faces of ACES: Adverse Childhood Experiences

This year's Eye Opener educational event was held on November 2, 2024 at The Club in Golden Valley thanks to the sponsorship of our GIVING WoMN member, Teresa Sit. Approximately 90 members and guests participated in the Saturday morning session to learn about ACEs, adverse childhood experiences.

With a mission to educate our membership, the Eye Opener is GIVING WoMN's "signature" educational event. The topic of ACES was chosen to inform and engage our members and their guests on mental and physical health challenges faced by children, ages 1 to 17, who have experienced traumatic events.

Traumatic childhood experiences can adversely affect a child's brain development and health as they grow into adults, leading to mental and chronic physical health conditions. Lifelong treatment and management of ACEs help a person lead a fulfilling life.

Our guest speakers joined us to share their expertise. Emily Clary from FamilyWise was very informative with definition of the topic and what the research tells us. She provided very helpful handouts for attendees, allowing a deeper dive after the event for those who want to learn more. Mel Williams (MSW, LICSW) from St. David’s Center for Child & Family Development shared more deeply the impact of ACES through a case study. Finally, Ashley Teigland (MA, LMFT) from Relate Counseling talked about tools and resources available in working with children and families.

It was truly a moving and watershed event for those in attendance. Thanks to all who participated!
